Becky McCray and Barry Moltz have just released their new book Small Town Rules: How Big Brands and Small Businesses Can Prosper in a Connected Economy. It is a fascinating resource with genuinely new insights for everyone in business.
In my 20-minute interview with Becky McCray, we discuss:
- Common misconceptions people have about small, local businesses
- What large corporations can learn about branding from small business
- The formula for instant social media success 🙂 (I am only sort of kidding – the way that Becky explained it made so much sense!)

I am extremely passionate about this topic, and will engage more of my own local business community in the coming year to learn how to make my own business more effective and more enduring. When we connect all size businesses, we ALL win.

I listened to this interview yesterday and it was eye-opening to think of my social media channels as a small business. I was struggling to think how to engage with people who follow my company on Twitter as I was taking a ‘scatter-gun’ approach to interacting with them. By simply being warm, welcoming and engaging with people, as if they were coming into my ‘shop’, it’s much easier to break the ice and interact with them. Thanks for the great advice!

I enjoyed this interview. Thinking of my social media presence as a welcoming small town storefront definitely feels like a reassuring and accessible mindset to adopt. Thanks Pam and Becky!
I live in a small, rural town, and I see a lot of issues with Small Business people not engaging with technology because they are too busy (and disorganized) with working IN their business instead of investing time working ON their business.
A small group of us have decided to get together and work out a plan to do more education. Thanks for sharing this.
Downloading the podcast, looks like it can be very helpful by following such rules. But isint it easier for small business to follow a said place of rules, rather than large ones, who need to be flexible.
i had the pleasure to interviewing becky on my show last week. she is a class individual, and the book is a stellar resource on how organizations both large and small can benefit from their small town rules…
