I am so glad that local Phoenix blogger Matthew Moran found me and told me about the upcoming Social Media Club event on December 14.  This is a very recently-formed group of people interested in Social Media/Web 2.0/Blogging and Podcasting kind of stuff in the Phoenix area.  I was so jazzed to find out about it, since I have yet to find an in-person group that I really connect with since moving to Arizona from the Bay Area 3 years ago.  The organizer, Francine Hardaway, sounds like a real spitfire and I can’t wait to meet her in person.

It looks like these clubs are active in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, LA, Phoenix, Vancouver, New York and London. The purpose from the website description says:

"Social Media Club is being organized for the purpose of sharing best practices, establishing ethics and standards, and promoting media literacy around the emerging area of Social Media. This is the beginning of a global conversation about building an organization and a community where the many diverse groups of people who care about social media can come together to discover, connect, share, and learn."

There has been entrepreneurship in the news here in Phoenix recently since Grand Canyon University is just starting here … a university devoted to entrepreneurship, with backing from advisers such as Michael Gerber from E-Myth fame. I am very curious to see how it turns out.  It sure would be fun to sit in on a class or two!

So if you live in the Phoenix area and were just going to sit at home twiddling your thumbs on December 14, sign up and come join the fun.  As much as virtual connections are great, there ain’t nothing like the real thing.

Update:  As fate would have it, my little guy got a terrible flu the day of the event – so I stayed home!  I heard fun was had by all, and I promise (fate willing) to see you in January.  For a recap of the event, see Francine’s post.

I wish I knew where something like this was happening in Denver.

Hi Pam: I’m interested in hearing what the Social Media Club thinks of video logs or “vlogs.”
It’s been said the great challenge for the internet is to foster a personal connection with the visitors to your website. If a picture is worth 1000 words, well-done video content should speak volumes.
