I will never be smarter than a 5th grader

custom valentine made by Michael

There are certain moments when I know I chose the right career path.

A few weeks ago, I had one of them.

I was given the privilege of addressing a jubilant and delightful 5th grade class of gifted students at an elementary school in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The teacher, Mrs. Elvira Deyamport, asked if I would Skype with her students to talk about entrepreneurship.

Little did I realize that we would walk out with a mini business venture! They were brilliant negotiators.

Thanks to Mrs. Davenport’s husband Will, (@peoplegogy on Twitter and http://peoplegogy.blogspot.com), we were able to videotape the presentation and post it on YouTube.

As you will learn from the videos, the venture we cooked up was custom Valentine cards.

They did a lovely job, and I got them in the mail today. Is there any better way to spend Valentine’s Day than reading these sparkly wonders?

Here they are:

You can reach the teacher Elvira Dayamport on Twitter @Elle_Spanish. I would be delighted if you told her how much you appreciate the dedication she has to teaching her kids about the world of business.

I believe she is more powerful than any CEO in any company, anywhere.

Teachers rule the world. Support them!

Thank you sweet, savvy 5th graders. Much love from Auntie Pam.

You can read the write-up of the event in the Hattiesburg American.

I don’t have the time to watch the videos right now (ever?), but I love what you and the teacher did. Your “payment” is worth its weight in gold. I imagine you started a new file folder just for those, right?

    Thanks for sharing!

  10. As a teacher, I say this ROCKS!
